Wholesale Product Development: The Creation of Charm Collective from Concept to Retail
Concept to Completion Episode 1: The Making of Charm Collective with Lauren Shelton
What does it really take to create a retail program that stops customers in their tracks?
In Episode 1 of our new Concept to Completion vlog series, Lauren Shelton takes viewers behind the scenes of Charm Collective — from the very first spark of inspiration to the final retailer-ready display now arriving in stores.
For retailers looking for the next standout jewelry program, this episode offers more than just a product story. It’s a firsthand look at the intentional design, merchandising strategy, and innovation behind a collection we built specifically for today’s gift and boutique shopper. This behind-the-scenes look at Charm Collective also highlights the thoughtful development and merchandising strategy behind bringing a retail program to life.
A Trend We Knew Needed Reinventing
Charm Collective started with a simple question: what comes next after the success of Soul Stacks?
As our team watched the charm jewelry trend continue to grow, they noticed a major gap in the market. Customers loved charms, but most charm programs weren’t easy to shop — or easy for retailers to merchandise.
“We saw that hole in the market, and we wanted to come up with our own program that would be, first and foremost, super retailer-friendly, but second of all, exciting for the customer.”
That challenge became the foundation for Charm Collective: a program designed to feel elevated, intuitive, giftable, and visually impossible to ignore.
Designed Differently — Down to the Details
One of the most exciting parts of Episode 1 is Lauren’s honest look at the product development process. For retailers, it’s also a real-world look at the wholesale product development process and the level of iteration required to create a program that feels both trend-forward and easy to merchandise.
What originally began as a magnetic charm bracelet concept quickly evolved after the team realized magnetic bracelets stuck to everything else customers were already wearing.
Instead of settling, they went back to the drawing board.
Working alongside an outside jewelry designer, Lauren helped develop a completely proprietary connection system inspired by a tiny carabiner — allowing the charms to connect seamlessly without dangling or tangling.
The result is a charm bracelet experience that feels modern, polished, and uniquely collectible.
“That process from magnetic charm bracelet to the Charm Collective that you see today was about a year and a half of opening molds, sending drawings, redoing specs, to finally get to the end product that we have today.”
For the development team, that level of intention matters. Every detail of the program was created with both the customer experience and the retailer experience in mind.
Built Around “Wow” Merchandising
At DM, merchandising is never an afterthought — and Charm Collective may be one of our clearest examples of that philosophy yet.
The display is designed to create instant visual impact across the store, drawing customers in with dynamic video content, bright merchandising, and highly giftable packaging. The goal was simple: create a program customers immediately want to walk over and interact with.
Once they do, the collection offers broad appeal with on-trend, wearable charms made from waterproof, tarnish-proof stainless steel designed for everyday wear.
Even more exciting for retailers? Charm Collective is built to grow.
Every season will bring a launch of new charms, new categories, and fresh additions to the collection — giving stores ongoing opportunities to drive repeat purchases and keep displays feeling new.
